Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass--it's about learning to dance in the rain.

The Big 2-0

photo credit: Jessica Diamond on flickr

Happy (late) birthday to me! My birthday was a couple weeks ago, and I have left the teenage years behind me forever. Can't say I'm particularly distressed about that.

This year's birthday was pretty low-key; I went to lunch with my friend Nicole, and after school spent the rest of the day enjoying the brownie fudge cheesecake my roommates bought for me, watching Brian Regan (but of course) and the movie August Rush, going to dinner with my cousin, laughing hysterically to myself over the Calvin and Hobbes collection given to me by one of my best friends in the world, and doing no homework whatsoever. :) Of course, that's not to say that it didn't get done later, but still. Allow me to feel slightly rebellious.

So how does it feel to be 20? Not a whole lot different than 19. In fact, I feel little this year--there have been several people in my classes and my ward who, upon learning how old I was turning, said, "You're 20? That's so young. You're just a baby." Perhaps so. But that's okay--I have a feeling I'll be just as old and wise as any of them with a little time.

Lost & Found Trip #2

Can I just say that I love going to BYU? This probably should not be news to anyone, but let me tell you one of the reasons why.

So I wake up this morning and prepare to leave for school, and I can't find my dance shoes ANYWHERE. Under the bed? Nope. In my backpack? Nope. In the bag I carried them to school in on Wednesday? Nope. I conclude that they are definitely not in my apartment, and I must've left them in the ballroom after class on Wednesday or in the dressing room where I got ready for work that evening. Oops. I feel like I've been walking around in a cloud lately--lots of late nights + lots of things for Ariel to remember = something probably gettting forgotten. So I sigh and go off to school, resolving to check the lost and found in the hour between linguistics and dance.

I walk down to the little Lost and Found place at the aforementioned time, walk in, describe my shoes to the attendant, and she walks into the back room and returns with them a minute later! Hooray! That's two for two; last fall I left my PURSE of all things on a bench outside before one of my classes, and when I went to the Lost and Found an hour later, it was there! While I realize that things do get taken/stolen even at BYU, I feel that this is one of the best places to lose something, because it has been my experience that people like to do the right thing and bring lost items to the Lost and Found, to the relief of their poor forgetful owners who don't really have money to buy new stuff. Yay, BYU! A big thank you to whoever brought back my shoes. I'm so happy I could dance. :)

The Funny Thing Is...

So I open the Daily Universe the other day, flip to the funnies, and see this Zits cartoon:

My uncle happens to be an orthodontist, and he is the proud owner of a red, open-top Ford Bronco jacked up on huge wheels.

No joke. :)

Overheard by Ariel

So you know all those "Overheard" sites? Like Overheard @ BYU on Facebook? Well, if there were such a site for my life, these quotes, which I've picked up over the past few months, would definitely be posted.

  • "Flirting is when you make fun of someone and they make fun of you back, and you both giggle." --One of my coworkers on my catering shift tonight
  • My roommate (in response to who would win a wrestling match): "If I was blind, deaf, and mute, I would still have a victory. And I would still have a victory yell." Me: *quizzical look* My roommate: "That's right."
  • "I do not STINK--I smell like MAN. There's a difference."--My brother Nate after returning from a campout this summer
  • My mom (to my 10-year-old brother): "Isaac! Come in and put on some clean clothes!" Isaac: "But I put clean clothes on yesterday!"
Classic.

Oh, Bed, Where Art Thou?

Sleep is a precious commodity this week.

The rundown:
Monday: Social Dance waltz test
Tuesday: Quiz in American Literary History
Wednesday: Linguistics midterm (30% of grade)
Thursday: British Literary History essay due, American Literary History midterm
Friday: Work from 3:30-11:00 pm (I get out of class at 3:00)
Saturday: Work from 8:00 am-4:00 pm

Three days (almost) down, three to go. The silver lining? It will all be over on Sunday, and I haven't crashed and burned yet. I'm taking that as a good sign.
